Alkaline Testers - The Most Effective Way to Test Alkaline Waters

Alkaline water refers to the PH level of water from 0-14. PH of 1 would mean that the water is very acidic while if the result is 7 and above then it means it would be very alkaline. Alkaline water is believed to help slow down the aging process, regulate the body's PH level and prevent chronic diseases like cancer. There are different ways in measuring the PH level of water to know if it's alkaline.

Ways in Measuring Alkaline Water

Electronic PH Meter

A calibrated pH test meter will give you the best results when it comes to testing the pH of water. However, constant calibration is necessary to get the most accurate results because alkaline water does come in a wide spectrum of pH. Although calibrated pH test meter will give you the best results when it comes to testing the pH of water. However, constant calibration is necessary to get the most accurate results because alkaline water does come in a wide spectrum of pH.

How to use the Electronic PH Meter:

  • The logarithmic scale of a pH meter is set from 1–14, wherein 1–6 is acidic, 7 is neutral, and 8–14 is alkaline.

  • Take a calibrated beaker and pour 100 ml water to be tested for pH as that is the standard sampling quantity.

  • Switch on your pH meter and allow it to warm up for about half an hour.

  • Reduce the exposure to air as much as possible, because the water, in case it is alkaline, may react with atmospheric carbon dioxide to form carbonic acid.

  • Rinse the probe and set the pH mode, and place it in a neutral buffer solution (with pH 7) for calibration. Similarly, place it in a buffer solution with pH 4. This allows the meter to calibrate for acidic solutions. In the case of basic solutions, place the probe in a buffer solution with pH 9 after placing it in a neutral buffer.

  • It is a good practice to stir all the buffer solutions well before use.

  • Shake off any excess fluid on the device before you place it in the sample liquid or water.

  • Place the device in the sample and press the measure pH button. You should get a stable reading in about two minutes.

  • Get another reading for accuracy. Match the pH meter’s value with that of the buffer.

  • Place the electrode in the correct buffer solution and press measure to take the reading.

  • Rinse and dry the electrode well

  • Now, place the electrode in the sample, press the measure button, and keep it for about two minutes.

PH Test Drops

When doing the test drops it is important that you're using the right ratio of PH

test drops to water and make sure that enough time is given for the water to properly alkalize. It is important to use high-quality test drops to get a better and more accurate result.

How to use the PH Test Drops/ PH Indicator Drops:

  • Apply 1-2 drops of ph indicator per 10 ml of the solution you would like to measure.

  • Shake to mix

  • The color of your solution will change almost instantly

  • Compare the result from the indicator to check its PH

PH Test Strips/ Kits

Testing your water with pH Test Kits can be a good way to determine if there is an issue with your water quality.PH test strips allow you to test the acidity of the water/ any liquid. The strips measure on a scale of 14 where seven is neutral. Lower numbers mean it's acidic while anything higher than 7 means it's alkaline or basic. If a pH strip shows that it is another number, you know that the water is not pure. pH strips are fast and easy to use.

How to use the PH Test Strips:

  • Fill a beaker with the water that you wish to test. Make sure that the beaker is completely clean of foreign contaminants that may affect your test.

  • Tear off a pH strip from the pack.

  • Dip the strip into the water briefly. The time required depends on the brand of strips that you are using. Some strips require 20 seconds while others need only one, so read the instructions carefully.

  • Remove the strip from the water after the appropriate amount of time has elapsed.

  • Compare the color of the strip to the chart provided with the strips. Acids are represented with warmer colors (red, orange, etc) while alkalines are represented with cooler colors (blue, green, etc).

Despite the lack of proven scientific research, proponents of alkaline water still believe in its health benefits.

Benefits of Alkaline Water

  • Pro-aging properties

  • Colon Cleansing properties

  • Immune System Support

  • Hydration & Skin Health

  • Weight Loss

  • Cancer Resistance

Conclusion

There are different ways to test the acidity/alkalinity of water but three are to be considered accurate and/or cost and time efficient. Among the three the electronic PH meter is considered the most accurate but is not recommended for the home test since it is not user-friendly. The fastest way to do the testing at home is the PH test drops and PH test strips since it comes in handy and the box itself comes with full instructions. It is considerable though that we buy the one with high quality.
